Drax & Mantis’ GOTG Holiday Special Dynamic Teased By James Gunn

  • November 21, 2022

James Gunn has teased the special connection between Dave Bautista’s Drax and Pom Klementieff’s Mantis in the soon-to-be-released Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Set to debut on Disney+ on November 25, the upcoming special sees the Guardians crew set out for Earth to celebrate Christmas and find Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill the ultimate present in the form of his childhood idol, Kevin Bacon. Previously described by Gunn as the epilogue for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 slate, the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special marks the second Marvel Studios Special Presentation after the hit Werewolf By Night which was released in October this year.

While Drax and Mantis began to develop a special bond during the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, their subsequent appearances in other MCU outings have not allowed them to further explore their unique dynamic. However, Gunn suggests that the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will correct this and focus heavily on the two fan-favorite characters. Speaking with ComicBook.com, Gunn says he “wanted to be able to put them at the center of the story as opposed to on the sidelines”. He also teased their characters’ special comedic chemistry and praised Bautista and Klementieff’s performances. Check out his full comments below:

“I think it’s such a unique relationship and they really are kind of like Abbot and Costello, but both are Costellos, but Drax is such an enormous Costello that he outweighs her Costello-ness. I love the two of them. I love the two of them. I wanted to be able to put them at the center of the story as opposed to on the sidelines. I think both of them have, in the past few movies that weren’t Guardians movies have been incredibly sidelined, haven’t been utilized so much, and so being able to really tell their story and put their journey at the middle of this was important to me. And to be able to see how, just how talented those two actors are as comedians and dramatically especially, you see how good Pom is in this show.”

While Mantis did not begin as an original member of the Guardians crew in the first Guardians of the Galaxy outing, her introduction in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 quickly cemented her as an important member of the team. Beyond any other character, however, it was her on-screen dynamic with Bautista’s Drax that led to some of the sequel’s most memorable and endearing comedic moments. While both characters would later return for Avengers: Infinity War and Thor: Love and Thunder, their unique bond was largely sidelined in favor of advancing already action-heavy plots. Seemingly conscious of this oversight, Gunn has sought to correct this injustice and provided the pair with an opportunity to explore their characters’ onscreen chemistry more fully. Even prior to the announcement of the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, there were calls for a potential Drax and Mantis spinoff adventure. While such a project never happened, the early critical reactions for Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are already dubbing it the Drax and Mantis Show.

With Bautista set to end his tenure as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it’s great to see his character given his own time to shine before Gunn’s trilogy comes to an end. While it is not yet clear whether Klementieff will be making a similar departure from the MCU, the opportunities for her to play off Bautista are quickly coming to a close. Before getting to see the duo’s final outing in next year’s Guardians of the Galaxy 3, relish the chance to spend time with the absurd pair in this month’s Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
