Top Gun: Maverick Gets The Perfect Streaming Release Date

  • November 23, 2022

Paramount finally reveals Top Gun: Maverick’s streaming release date. Tom Cruise returned to his iconic pilot role from 1986 earlier this year for the long-awaited sequel. Top Gun: Maverick surpassed all expectations in terms of its reception, both critically and financially. The sequel is one of the best-reviewed blockbusters of the year, while Top Gun 2’s box office had incredible legs all summer long. This allowed the movie to become the highest-grossing film of 2022 domestically and worldwide, and it became Tom Cruise’s biggest movie ever after making $1.4 billion. So far, the movie has only been available in theaters and on home video.

Nearly six months after the movie’s theatrical release, Top Gun: Maverick’s streaming release date has finally been confirmed. Paramount announced today that Top Gun 2 begins streaming on Paramount+ on December 22, 2022. The release comes right before Christmas and nearly seven months after the movie first hit theaters. Paramount previously considered releasing Top Gun: Maverick straight to streaming during COVID, but Tom Cruise continually championed the film’s potential to connect with audiences in cinemas. Those looking to watch the movie before Top Gun 2’s streaming release can do so on digital, 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD currently.

The timing of Top Gun: Maverick’s streaming release date is a smart move by Paramount. The movie’s arrival on Paramount+ during the holiday season could draw lots of new subscribers to the streaming service as families potentially get together to watch the film. It also appears to be a brilliant play by Paramount to once again push Top Gun 2 and Tom Cruise into the awards conversation. The sequel has become an unexpected contender for nominations from the Academy Awards and other awards bodies.

Paramount releasing Top Gun: Maverick on streaming in December comes at the same time that many other studios are releasing hopeful awards contenders in theaters. Universal will soon release Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans, while Netflix has Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery releasing on the streaming service the day after Top Gun 2 hits Paramount+. Other potential awards contenders like Will Smith’s Emancipation for Apple TV+ and Damien Chazelle’s Babylon are also releasing this winter and hoping to leave an imprint on Oscar voters.

Since Top Gun: Maverick released during the summer and well before the traditional awards season window in Hollywood, the streaming release could be Paramount’s way to push Tom Cruise’s sequel back into the conversation. While all the new releases potentially compete for attention and make voters remember them, Top Gun 2 can come in and remind everyone what made it so special. Oscar nomination voting begins in the middle of January 2023 after all, so Top Gun: Maverick’s streaming release is very timely.
